A Community-Based Coral Reef Conservation to Support Sustainable Reef Fisheries in Buleleng District, North Bali: Engaging Marine Aquarium Fishermen in the Benefits of Reef Conservation

Period of April 2010 – October 2011

Overview

Reef fishes and invertebrates are collected from the reefs of Buleleng district in North Bali and exported from Ngurah Rai international airport for the international market. The reefs of Buleleng have been a source of livelihood for over 500 aquarium fishermen for the aquarium trade over the last 30 years. However, the reefs and fisheries have been seriously damaged by the use of destructive fishing methods. Catches have been wasted because of high stock mortalities and damage as a result of poor methods of capture and handling. These practices have led to depletions of many reef species in the area.

This project aims to establish a sustainable marine resource fisheries through reef conservation that supports the livelihoods of the fishermen and coastal communities. It aims to increase the capacity of the fishermen and associated local communities to rehabilitate reefs and protect them, and to prevent further reef damage and loss of reef fisheries populations so the reefs are able to provide long-term livelihoods for them. The project aims to eliminate destructive fishing practices in the area by raising awareness of the need to protect the marine resources, and to create incentives for reef management.
