Fish Data Management

The initial goals when developed the harvest data are:

  • Provide baseline data
  • Develop database of marine ornamental fisheries
  • To assist Marine Affairs and Fisheries Official for data collection and analysis to support in fisheries management,
  • Monitoring tools,

Ongoing/the progress:

  1. Collecting harvest data from supplier (local traders) records (logbook) and input into the computer,
  2. Prepare input form in the computer using simple Excel spreadsheet,
  3. Prepare fish species list (inc. local name, common name and scientific name),
  4. The inputted data will automatically come out as tables and charts,
  5. Information about number  and volume of species that have been collected monthly,
  6. Information about collection site : number of collectors, days of fishing.

Some challenges need to be addressed:

  1. Logistical constraint in data collection, as sometimes  data cannot be collected regularly,
  2. Data input process is very time consuming ,
  3. The need to modify the collecting method from census to sampling (or combination of both),
  4. Lack of funding and financial support to maintain data collection and analysis process
